I’ve just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I’ve been really working on my diet, but how can exercise help me?
It’s wonderful you’ve decided to work on making yourself healthier. Diet can be the hardest part of any change, so you’re off to a great start!
The biggest benefit of exercise is that your blood glucose levels become easier to control. If you have Type 2 diabetes, you have too much glucose in your blood. The good thing is that your muscles can use glucose without insulin when you’re exercising and reduce the levels in your blood. Many people who are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight, so beginning an exercise program may seem like a daunting task. However, starting slow and committing yourself to taking a walk after dinner or on your lunch break can be the start to experiencing the benefits.
As you settle into your exercise program, complications arising from Type 2 diabetes are also reduced. Heart problems can be exacerbated by diabetes, but cardio health and good cholesterol are sustained through regular exercise. Since exercise can make insulin more efficient, it is also a good idea to have a quick snack available just in case your levels drop too low. Remember to always consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program and follow the suggestions to starting an exercise program.
