James Robert Barkey, 85, of Monongahela, died Friday, November 9, 2018, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.
He was born April 20, 1933, in Monongahela, a son of Joseph Sr. and Mary Petrick Barkey.
Jim was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and was a member of Carroll American Legion James C. Ford Post 949 in Dunkirk.
He retired from Frank Irey Construction in Monongahela.
For 40 years, Jim was an usher at the former St. Anthony Church and, at the time of his death, was a member of St. Damien of Molokai Church, both in Monongahela.
For years, Jim coached Little League and Pony League baseball in Monongahela and also coached the Elizabeth Legion League. He was a garden enthusiast and enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, and was especially proud of his cantaloupes and watermelons.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Repasky Barkey, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage May 4, 2018; son Terry Barkey and wife Pamela of Coal Center; daughter Dr. Karen Barkey and husband Dr. John Herron of Gibsonia; son James Barkey and wife Wendy of Waynesville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Adam, Brandon, Miranda, Tyler and Hailey Barkey; great-grandson, Jacob Barkey; brother Charles Barkey and wife Patti of Pleasant Hills; two sisters, Mary Ann Barkey and Betty Jane Bova of Monongahela; and two sisters-in-law, Antoinette Barkey of Van Voorhis and Marjorie Barkey of Jacksonville, Fla.
In addition to his parents, deceased are eight brothers, Joseph Jr., Steve, Edward, John, Clarence, Vincent R. and George Barkey and infant Vincent Barkey, and five sisters, Helen Durieux, Stella Hillman, Irene Wilcosky, Marie Fedak and Dorothy Wilcosky.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, in St. Damien of Molokai Church. Committal service and interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Township, with military rites accorded by Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
