One killed in West Alexander wreck
A West Virginia man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Donegal Township Friday morning.
The wreck occurred about 5:30 a.m. on Route 40 at the intersection with North Liberty Road in West Alexander village.
State police said in a report Leland Mackey, 47, of Bethany, was driving a 2004 Volvo wagon south on Liberty when he failed to yield before entering the junction with Route 40.
At the same time, William Vance, 24, of Claysville, was piloting his 2010 Dodge Ram through the intersection, going west.
State police said Vance’s vehicle rammed into the driver’s side of Mackey’s, which then careened into a tree near the intersection before finally stopping. Vance’s truck traveled down an embankment. Both vehicles had to be towed.
Vance was uninjured. His passenger, 24-year-old James Garove of McDonald, was taken to Washington Hospital with apparent minor injuries.
The county coroner’s office said rulings on the cause and manner of Mackey’s death are pending.
State police are investigating the accident. Donegal Township police, Washington County Ambulance and Chair and West Alexander Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the crash scene.
