St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, 201 E. Main Street, Uniontown, is once again offering the Carpathian Cookery cookbook for sale. Now in its 17th printing, the 330-page cookbook includes sections on Christmas and Easter customs and recipes, traditional Rusyn and Slavic foods, other ethnic dishes, and many recipes from St. John’s parishioners. The Mon/Yough Chapter 3 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology will meet on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 203 Frich Hall on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. There will be a business meeting at 7 p.m. followed by a speaker at 7:30. Leighann Wharton, a junior anthropology major at California University, will speak at 7:30. Her topic will be “Aditu Arkeologia: Bioarchaeology Summer Field School in Spain.”
The Daughters of Grace Choir will present “Old Songs for New Dogs” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, held in the sanctuary of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church located on East Greene Street in Carmichaels. The choir will present a variety of popular songs from the 1930’s to the 1970’s, including “Blue Moon,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Please Mr. Postman” and “Stand by Me” among others. A free-will offering will be received to benefit Canine Partners for Life: Prison Puppy Program, a local nonprofit organization working to provide service dogs to those in need. Susan Flemming, volunteer with Canine Partners for Life, will share information about the organization and will also introduce several of the program’s pups in training. The Greene County Department of Recreation announces the 2018-2019 schedule for “Skate & Dance” events that will be held at the Mon View Roller Rink, 77 Stoney Hill Road, Greensboro. “Skate & Dance” events will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 16 and 30, and Dec. 7 and 14, with skating hours between 7 and 9 and dancing hours between 9 and 11. Open skating will also be held at the roller rink on Saturdays, from 7 to 10 p.m. No “Skate & Dance” events will be held Nov. 23 and Dec. 21 and 28 due to the holidays. The roller rink will be closed Nov. 23 and 24 for Thanksgiving, and from Dec. 22-Jan. 26 for routine maintenance. The 2019 season kicks off with a “Skate & Dance” from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Admission to the “Skate & Dance” events for all ages is $8 per person. For open skating on Saturdays, admission is $5. Following the Feb. 1 kickoff, “Skate & Dance” events will be held Feb. 8, 15 and 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29; April 5 and 12. The roller rink will close for the season at the end of business on Saturday, April 12. Mon View is available to rent for private parties, and skate lessons are available by appointment only. West Alexander United Methodist Women will hold a bazaar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the church on Main Street. There will be homemade craft items, baked goods, a tasting table, white elephant sale, and soup and sandwiches for eat-in or take-out. No early birds.
Holly Days Christmas Craft Show, a fundraiser for the Claysville Community Center, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the center located at 212 Main Street. The event will feature 32 crafters in two buildings, the community center and on the first floor of the American Legion Hall, 208 Main Street. A $10 buffet lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. offering all homemade dishes. A la carte and takeout will also be available. The menu will include chicken noodle soup, meatball sandwiches, chicken or tuna salad on lettuce cups, potato salad, fruit salad and assorted desserts. Drinks are an additional $1. A holiday vendor, craft and artisan show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at St. Katharine Drexel Social Hall, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville (formerly Ava Maria Parish and Knights of Columbus). There will be an auction and 50/50 drawing, and food will be available for purchase. Tables are still available at a cost of $25. Proceeds benefit the Bentleyville Lions Club. An oldies dance featuring music from the ’50s and ’60s with disc jockey Steve Barrett will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Center Township Fire Hall in Rogersville. There will prizes for best dancers, best dressed (’50s and ’60s theme) and more. Food will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30.
