Penguins trade Sprong
The Daniel Sprong experiment is over for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Penguins sent Sprong to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday for defenseman Marcus Pettersson.
Pittsburgh selected Sprong in the second round of the 2015 draft, but the 21-year-old struggled to find a secure spot in Pittsburgh’s forward group. He thrived at the American Hockey League level, scoring 32 goals in 2017-18 for Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but had trouble duplicating that success in the NHL. Sprong has four goals and five assists in 42 NHL games, including no goals and four assists in 16 games this season.
Pettersson, 22, had six assists this season for the Ducks and one goal in 49 career games after making his debut with Anaheim last season.
Freshmen honored by PAC
Wasington & Jefferson College’s Primo Zini, a freshman basketball player, is making the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week award a weekly occurrence.
For the third straight week, Zini was honored after averaging 19.5 points per game. In an overtime loss to Saint Vincent, the 6-3 guard had 22 points. In a 67-63 win over Geneva Saturday, Zini helped the Presidents rally with 17 second-half points.
He is tied for 10th in the conference with 13.4 points per game, which leads all freshmen.
Waynesburg University’s Brook Fuller earned the same recognition as the rookie of the week for the women.
Fuller led the Yellow Jackets in points (15), rebounds (7.5) and blocks (2) per game in PAC games against Chatham and Grove City.
Wrestlers earn
conference laurels
Waynesburg University senior Jake Evans won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week after winning the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.
Evans, a heavyweight, earned three consecutive first-period pins then defeated Gettysburg former All-American Paul Triandafilou in the championship bout, 6-2.
Washington & Jefferson’s Manny Dovshek was awarded the PAC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
Dovshek, a Bentworth graduate, took sixth place in the 125-pound bracket at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational. Dovshek went 4-3 at the event, earning a pair of pins in the opening rounds.
Dodgers, Roberts
agree on contract
The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed on a four-year contract with manager Dave Roberts, which would keep him at the helm of the team through 2022.
Roberts just finished his third season as the Dodgers’ skipper during which he led LA to its second straight World Series. Los Angeles lost in five games to the Boston Red Sox in October. The Dodgers lost the 2017 World Series in seven games to the Houston Astros.
He has led the Dodgers to seasons of 91, 104 and 92 wins, and is 287-200 overall.
Mets acquire Cano, Diaz
The New York Mets have acquired longtime star second baseman Robinson Cano and major league saves leader Edwin Diaz from the Seattle Mariners in a seven-player trade.
The Mets also are getting $20 million from the rebuilding Mariners in the deal announced Monday.
Seattle received outfielder Jay Bruce, reliever Anthony Swarzak and three prospects: former first-round draft picks Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic, plus right-hander Gerson Bautista.
In his first big move as the Mets’ general manager, Brodie Van Wagenen brought the 36-year-old Cano back to New York.
Van Wagenen previously was an agent and represented the former Yankees slugger.
Cano is halfway through a $240 million, 10-year contract. With the cash from Seattle, the Mets will be responsible for $100 million of the $120 million owed to Cano.
