Old-Fashioned Christmas a wonderful event

Words escape me when I think about the things that people can do when they put their minds to it. It doesn’t happen without hard work and planning.

With that, I’d like to commend and thank the many who made The Old-Fashioned Hallmark Christmas in Canonsburg happen Dec. 1.

I debated not going due to the rain that fell all day. But then I decided I had to. After all, this was big. Who doesn’t love Hallmark and all the things that it stands for?

Despite the inconvenience that the rain caused, a lot of people were there to enjoy and support the much-anticipated event. It was very impressive and wonderful! And it didn’t happen just by wishing for it. It took a lot of determination, enthusiasm, hard work and dedication.

Thank you to all who worked to make it become a reality. You brought a real lift and spirit into our community. It took a team of people willing to work for something that mattered and stirred up a lot of excitement. There was a definite energy that was felt by all.

Was Bush eulogy lost on Trump?

Much can be said for George W. Bush’s moving eulogy for his father, George H.W. Bush. And there is much to be learned as well.

In fact, I can’t help wondering if our 45th president isn’t already thinking about how he would want to be remembered. Does President Trump want to be remembered as a cold-hearted belligerent man? Or would he prefer to be remembered as a man of decency, humility and a gentleman?

While I give Trump credit for shaking hands with the Obamas, the man has some serious work ahead for any fence-mending. But when Trump sat down, I couldn’t help but notice that his arms were tightly crossed in front of his chest – which could signal that he is closed to any peace-making and friendships. And perhaps the words of our 43rd president were totally impervious to our 45th. Time will tell.

Airlines should take a page from the past

With all of the wrangling about comfort and service animals on passenger airline flights, the simplest, cheapest and most expeditious solution to this dilemma is to look to the past. Smoking was permitted at the rear of every flight before it was disallowed all together. The airlines should pre-board these passengers with their respective animal companions beginning at the rear of the airplane, just like they did with smoking passengers for all those years. They also should allow other passengers to disembark prior to those with animals.

The system worked for smokers and the rest of the flying public, so why reinvent a system that worked for many years?
