LETTER: Lend a hand to Meals on Wheels
This time of year, I am always impressed with the generosity exhibited in the Washington County area. It starts with Thanksgiving dinners offered by many organizations with so many volunteers making and serving the food. In fact, there are so many volunteers that many are told they are not needed. Following this is a toy drive. Just walk into building four at the county fairgrounds weeks before Christmas Day and you will see the volunteers with the task of wrapping toys that are piled from floor to ceiling destined for children in need. It is a sight that moves one to tears.
Let’s not forget a huge segment of society that we should never neglect. I talked to the Rev. Donald Austin from the Canonsburg-Houston Meals on Wheels and was told that one-third of the people who receive meals every week cannot afford to pay the very small fee, and Meals on Wheels depends on the generosity of organizations and private donors. They are now in need of a commercial freezer.
As you celebrate and feel very charitable during this wonderful time of year, consider helping the Meals on Wheels program.
