High school basketball roundup: Beth-Center, Waynesburg win tournament titles

Tournament Most Valuable Player Easton McDaniel scored a game-high 22 points and Beth-Center rode a big first quarter to a 63-53 victory over Carmichaels in the championship game of the Carmichaels King Coal Lions Club tournament Friday night.

The win evened B-C’s record at 4-4 on the season. The Bulldogs forged a 20-5 lead after one quarter that had Carmichaels (6-3) playing catch-up all night.

J.J. Green scored eight of his 16 points in Beth-Center’s big first quarter. Andrew Bower had 11 points. Both Green and Bower were named to the all-tournament team.

Dylan Wilson led Carmichaels in scoring with 16 points. The Mikes had a balanced attack as Matt Barrish, Chris Barrish and Al Cree each scored 10 points.

Waynesburg 76, Jefferson-Morgan 39: Lucas Garber scored a game-high 22 points as Waynesburg dominated the first half and fourth quarter to defeat Jefferson-Morgan, 76-39, in the Bentworth tournament championship game.

Chris King and Richard Bortz scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, as the Raiders jumped out to a 32-11 halftime lead. Garber, King and Bortz made the all-tournament team.

Waynesburg (6-2) won its third consecutive game.

Tahj Jacobs and Devin Stoneking paced Jefferson-Morgan (2-8) with 14 points each.

Fort Cherry 69, Propel Montour 62: Zach Vincenti scored a season-high 20 points as Fort Cherry defeated Propel Montour, 69-62, in a consolation game at the Avella tournament.

It was the first win for the Rangers this season.

Tied at halftime, 32-32, Fort Cherry (1-6) scored 20 points in the third quarter to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Maddox Truschel and Noah Babirad scored 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Propel Montour was paced by Khalil Kerr’s 24 points. Cory Simmons also had 22.

Chartiers-Houston 52, McGuffey 48: Evan Simpson scored 10 of Chartiers-Houston’s 20 points in the third quarter as the Bucs held on to defeat McGuffey, 52-40, in the Avella tournament.

Simpson tied with McGuffey’s C.J. Cole with a game-high 21 points.

Chartiers-Houston (5-4) limited the Highlanders to four points in the first quarter then extended its lead with the 20-point third quarter. Evan Simpson scored 10 points for the Bucs.

Nate Witkowky also finished with 10 for McGuffey (6-3), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.

Burgettstown 64, Avella 28: Dante Gianfrancesco set a school record with nine three-pointers as Burgettstown downed tournament host Avella, 64-28.

Gianfrancesco scored a game-high 27 points for the Blue Devils, who improve to 5-3 and advance to the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight against Chartiers-Houston.

Outscoring the Eagles 18-1 in the first quarter, Burgettstown led 38-11 at halftime. Gianfrancesco didn’t play the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock. Scott Ferris finished in double figures with 14 points.

Tanner Terensky and Brandon Samol each scored five points for Avella (2-6).

South Allegheny 60, Bentworth 25: South Allegheny opened the game on a 16-2 run and cruised the remainder of the game to defeat tournament host Bentworth, 60-25.

Omar Faulkner led South Allegheny (3-6) with 27 points. Jett Jones made three three-pointers and finished with 16 points.

The lone scorer in double figures for Bentworth (0-8) was Shawn Dziak with 12 points.

Geibel Catholic 69, Mapletown 47: Geibel Catholic scored 48 points in the middle two quarters on its way to a 69-47 victory over Mapletown in the consolation game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.

Cole Kendall and Enzo Fetsko shared scoring honors for the Gators (5-3) with 20 points apiece. Ryan Anderson added 13.

Chuck Lash scored 11 and Lance Stevenson finished with 10 for Mapletown (0-8).

Girls results

Washington 51, Indiana 25: Undefeated Washington eased into the championship of the Prexies’ holiday tournament with a 51-25 victory over Indiana.

Washington (7-0) will play Greensburg Central Catholic in the Saturday championship game at 3:30 p.m. GCC was a 62-49 winner over Brashear in the other first-round game.

The Prexies closed each half with a flurry, outscoring Indiana 15-5 in the second quarter to open a 26-11 lead. Washington pulled away in the fourth quarter, holding a 19-9 scoring edge.

Carley Allen scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Washington attack. Randi Thomas followed with 10 points and Tamia Russell led on the boards with 11 rebounds.

North Allegheny 50, Trinity 37: Undefeated North Allegheny ran its record to 10-0 but not before getting a scare from Trinity in the Penn Hills tournament.

The Tigers outscored Trinity 18-11 in the fourth quarter and used some torrid free-throw shooting to slip past upset-minded Trinity 50-37.

The Hillers (4-4) led 10-9 after one quarter before NA forged leads of 23-18 at halftime and 32-26 after three quarters. Trinity cut the gap to two points with four minutes remaining but a Hillers turnover was followed by a three-pointer by NA. The Tigers then sealed the win from the free-throw line, where they went 8-for-8 in the fourth quarter and 12-for-13 for the game.

Lizzy Groetsch led NA with a game-high 18 points. Taylor Rawls and Rachel Martindale each had 11 points.

Kaylin Venick paced Trinity with 14 points. Julia Chakos scored 10 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Peters Township 76, Franklin Regional 43: Undefeated Peters Township used a double-double by Makenna Marisa, a suffocating full-court press and a 30-point first quarter to overwhelm Franklin Regional 76-43 in the Hempfield tournament.

Peters Township (7-0) led 30-11 after one quarter as Marisa scored 12 of her game-high 24 points. She also had 12 assists.

The Indians led 47-25 at halftime and 68-34 after three quarters.

Journey Thompson scored 18 points for PT including eight in the big first quarter. Mckenzie Lehman had 13 points. The Indians play Mars today at noon.

Cali Konek scored 16 points for Franklin Regional (4-3).

Carmichaels 35, Waynesburg 33: Carmichaels outscored Waynesburg by nine points in the second half to down the Raiders 35-33 and win the King Coal Lions’ Christmas Tournament. It was the first time a girls division was held in the long-running tournament.

Waynesburg (4-4) had a 24-17 lead at the half, but a 10-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter trimmed the Mikes’ deficit to one point.

C.P. Miller led the Raiders with 17 points.

Carmichaels (3-7) was paced by a game-high 19 points from Gina Ranieri.

Mapletown 51, Propel Andrew Street 23: After starting the season 0-4, Mapletown won its third consecutive game and the Bentworth tournament by defeating Propel Andrew Street 51-23.

Abby Antill led the Maples with 15 point as they took a 18-6 lead into halftime. Antill was named the tournament MVP. Kelsey Smith had 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Mapletown (3-4). Kayla Smith, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored seven points.

Most of the offense generated by Propel Andrew Street (3-4) came from Keeley Brockington, who scored a game-high 16 points.

Avella 43, New Brighton 14: Giving up its fewest points in a single game this season, Avella bounced back after a tough opening-round loss to defeat New Brighton, 43-14, in the consolation game of the Rochester tournament.

The Eagles limited New Brighton (1-7) to three or fewer points in three of the four quarters. They led 19-5 at halftime.

Alyssa Hunt scored half of the points for New Brighton, finishing with seven.

Avella (6-2) was paced by a game-high 10 points from Colleen Kinney. Jordan Rush also finished with nine points.

Carlynton 50, Fort Cherry 26: Angelica Diallo scored 10 points and Carlynton stopped Fort Cherry from scoring in double-digits in three of the four quarters to defeat the Rangers, 50-28, in the McGuffey tournament.

Outside of a 10-point third quarter, Fort Cherry (4-5) was limited to 16 points. It is the Rangers third consecutive loss.

Fort Cherry’s McKenzie Faure led all scorers with 11 points.

It is the fourth straight win for Carlynton, which improves to 7-1 overall.

California 56, Bentworth 14: Three players scored in double figures as California defeated tournament host Bentworth, 56-14.

Camari Walden led the Trojans, who improve to 4-4 overall, with 12 points. Jordyn Cru scored 11 points and Sydney Smichnick finished with 10.

Caroline Rice had eight points for Bentworth (1-7).

Belle Vernon 41, Charleroi 31: Belle Vernon outscored Charleroi 11-3 in the pivotal fourth quarter to pull away for a 41-31 victory over Charleroi in the Cal U Classic.

Belle Vernon (6-3), which won its sixth in a row, trailed 19-13 at halftime before outscoring the Cougars 17-9 in the third quarter to gain a two-point lead. The Leopards held Charleroi to only 12 points in the second half.

Rachel Wobrack led Belle Vernon with 13 points. Belle Skobel had 13 points for Charleroi (3-7).

Albert Gallatin 47, Monessen 31: Albert Gallatin led throughout for a 47-31 victory over Monessen in the Laurel Highlands tournament.

The Colonials (3-4) led 8-5 after the first quarter and 21-12 at halftime. Albert Gallatin pulled away in the third quarter.

The Colonials’ Bryn Bezjak led all scorers with 18 points. Anaejah Harris had 13. Qitarah Hardison scored eight points for Monessen (1-8).

Beth-Center 48, Frazier 39: Beth-Center grabbed the lead early and didn’t relent for a 48-39 victory over Frazier in the Cal U Holiday Hoopfest.

The Bulldogs led 17-9 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 29-17 at halftime.

Olivia Greco led the Bulldogs (4-3) with a game-high 18 points.

Sierra Twigg scored a team-high 15 points for Frazier (4-5) and Brooke Poling had 12.

Chartiers-Houston 53, Cornell 8: Chartiers-Houston bolted to a 22-0 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 53-8 victory over winless Cornell in the Riverside tournament.

Sophomore Zameriah Edwards scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the big first quarter for Chartiers-Houston (3-5), which led 35-1 at halftime. Dominique Mortimer scored 12 points for C-H.

McGuffey 45, Burgettstown 31: McGuffey put three players in double figures, led by Abby Donnelly’s 16 points, and the Highlanders won for the second night in a row in their tournament, defeating Burgettstown, 45-31.

McGuffey (4-5) pulled away in the second half after leading 20-17 at halftime. The Highlanders outscored Burgettstown (4-4) 14-5 in the pivotal third quarter.

Keira Nicolella scored 11 points for McGuffey and Cassie Darrall had 10. Burgettstown was led in scoring by Avery Havelka with eight points.

Bethel Park 69, South Fayette 52: Olivia Wesphal scored a agme-high 29 points and powered Bethel Park to a 69-52 victory over South Fayette in the Black Hawks’ tournament.

Bethel Park trailed 15-13 after one quarter but outscored South Fayette 34-19 over the next two quarters.

Skylar Aitken was the leading scorer for South Fayette with 13 points.
