A young Canonsburg man was arrested and charged in connection with a robbery that allegedly netted him several hundred dollars from a borough convenience store on Saturday.

Court records show Zion Filby, 18, allegedly admitted to police that night that he had gone to Seven Hills Convenience with a large knife and demanded money from a clerk earlier in the evening.

Police were called to the store, which is in the 300 block of Euclid Avenue, about 6:15 p.m. When they arrived, a clerk reported someone wearing a red hoodie, gloves and something to cover his face had told him to “give me your money” and “give me everything in the register,” according to court papers. The suspect allegedly had waved a knife at the clerk and a customer before making off with $350.

While police were there, Detective Michael Ledger received a tip from a confidential informant that Filby was the robber, court papers say. The informant referred Ledger to an unnamed juvenile witness, who also pointed to Filby.

Police detained Filby at home on Bernstein Avenue and then brought him to the station, where police read him the Miranda warning. He allegedly gave a confession that matched details of the clerk’s account. He said following the robbery he’d jumped a nearby creek to change clothes in the laundry room of an apartment complex at 544 Craighead Street. Officers found muddy clothes matching Filby’s and the clerk’s descriptions, plus a bag, in a washing machine in that building.

Court papers did not say whether police had recovered the money and knife.

Filby was being held in Washington County Jail on $20,000 bond following his arraignment before District Judge Gary Havelka. Police charged him with robbery, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
