W&J wrestlers earn
2 first-place finishes
First-place showings by Michael Heinl and Jared Walker of South Fayette highlighted a strong day for the Washington & Jefferson wrestling team at the Jamestown Community College Open.
Heinl cruised to the top spot of the 149-pound bracket, going 4-0 without allowing a single point to his opponents. In his opener, the junior took a 16-0 tech fall over Aidan Fultz of Mercyhurst. Heinl then knocked off Gannon’s Deven Abbott, 8-0, in the quarterfinals, before defeating Brockport’s Austin Reed with a tech fall (15-0) in the semis. He finished with his third tech fall over Katrell Jackson of Niagara, 16-0.
Walker also went perfect with four victories in the 165-pound weight class. Following a first-round bye, the junior defeated Gannon’s Jake Kallenborn, 14-8, in the quarters. In the semis, he topped fellow Golden Knight Giovanni Ciotti 5-2. Walker’s final match saw him earn a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Anthony Bell of Niagara.
