The National Aviary offers Winter Raptor Adventures with ornithologist Robert Mulvihill, for bird enthusiasts of all ages.
Two separate Owl Prowls – guided, after-dark nature walks to look and listen for owls in Pittsburgh’s local parks – are planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 in Frick Park and 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Audubon Greenway Conservation Area in Sewickley. Equipped with an owl call device, Mulvihill will lead the group through wooded paths, during which participants will enjoy a discussion about owls and their adaptations, as well as an introduction to the species of owls that can be found in the area. Cost is $10 per person.
Birders of all experience levels can take part in A National Aviary Bus Tour: Winter Raptor Survey from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 and Thursday, Feb. 7. Travel the back roads north of Pittsburgh on a window-lined bus as Mulvihill helps spot and identify raptors seen along the way. Participants may get off the bus to view raptors through a spotting scope for close-up views. Participants will see up to 10 different species of raptors, including winter-only species such as the Rough-legged Hawk and Northern Shrike, and will record their sightings to contribute to the Hawk Migration Association’s annual winter raptor survey. The tour will also include a visit to Goddard State Park to see a bald eagle nest. Cost of $85 for Aviary members and $95 for non-members includes lunch.
Both events are open to ages 7 and above. Participants should bring a flashlight, dress for the weather, and wear sturdy walking shoes. Space is limited for both the Owl Prowl and Winter Raptor Bus Tour. Preregistration is required by contacting Audrey Beichner at 412-258-9463 or audrey.beichner@aviary.org.
