Jefferson Township Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in the White Church building located on Fire Road in Burgettstown (Eldersville) across from the Jefferson Township Fire Hall. Presenter Chris Sedlak will discuss the influenza pandemic of 1918 that predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. In the U.S. about 28 percent of the population became infected, and 500,000 to 675,000 died. Lunch will be an authentic 1918 lunch of homemade macaroni soup, made from the recipe out of the 1916 US Army Cooks Manual. The historical society’s museum will be opened for visitors following the presentation.

Pioneers West Historical Society will hold a board meeting on Saturday, Jan. 19, at a new location – the Oakdale Community Center, 104 Seminary Ave. Upcoming meetings include: membership meeting with presentation, 1 p.m. Feb. 16; board meeting, 1 p.m. March 16; board meeting, 6:30 p.m. May 21, with membership meeting and presentation following at 7; board meeting, 7 p.m. July 16; annual membership and board meeting, 1 p.m. Aug. 17; board meeting, 12:30 p.m. Sept. 28; board meeting, 12:30 p.m. Nov. 16, with membership meeting and presentation following at 1.

Nazareth Baptist Church located on Lincoln Street in Washington will hold a Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20. Guest speaker will be Rev. Kenneth L. Huston, pastor of First Church of God in Christ Ministries and president of the NAACP Allegheny East Branch. The event is sponsored by the NAACP Washington Branch.
