Small college basketball roundup: Waynesburg rallies to win at W&J

Frank Bozicevic scored a game-high 23 points, including a go-ahead layup with 1:22 remaining, as Waynesburg rallied to defeat Washington & Jefferson 83-76 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Henry Memorial Center.

Waynesburg (3-2, 4-9) snapped a four-game losing streak. W&J (4-2, 6-9) had its four-game conference winning streak end.

The Presidents led 76-70 with 2:39 remaining after two free throws by Cameron Seeman. Waynesburg would then score the final 13 points of the game. The Yellow Jackets held the Presidents without a field goal in the game’s final 4:22.

Bozicevic’s layup gave Waynesburg a 77-76 lead. Following a timeout, W&J committed a turnover and Waynesburg sealed the win by making six consecutive free throws, including the final four by Matt Popeck, who scored 16 points.

Brennan Smith had 18 points for Waynesburg, which was 14-for-14 at the free-throw line.

Nicholas Campalong scored 15 points to lead W&J, which led 71-61 with 5:45 remaining. Seeman finished with 13 points. Zach Queen and Primo Zini each had 11 points.

California 72, Gannon 57: California won its second game in Erie in four days as the Vulcans used a 23-point performance by sophomore guard Brent Pegram to defeat Gannon 72-57 in a PSAC West Division game.

Pegram, who scored 34 points in the Vulcans’ victory Wednesday at Edinboro, made seven of 11 shots against Gannon and had four of Cal’s nine three-pointers.

The Vulcans (3-3, 5-7) led by only one point at halftime and didn’t take the lead for good until Zyan Collins made a three-pointer with 14:34 remaining that gave Cal a 45-42 edge. Collins scored 16 points and was one of four Cal players in double figures.

Collin MacAdams had 12 points Donte Williams scored 10. The Vulcans shot 55 percent, going 11-for-20 in each half.

Gannon (1-6, 3-10) was led by Daryl Porter’s 15 points. The Golden Knights shot only 24 percent in the second half and 34 percent for the game.

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 88, Waynesburg 66: Alie Seto scored 26 points, Danielle Parker had another double-double and Washington & Jefferson outscored Waynesburg in every quarter en route to an 88-66 win in a PAC game.

W&J (5-1, 9-5) extended its winning streak to seven games. Waynesburg (1-4, 3-10) has lost four in a row.

Seto made 11 of 16 shots and all four of her free throws. Parker scored 18 of her 20 points in the first half, when W&J forged a 46-38 lead. Seto scored 23 points in the second half, making 10 of her 12 shots as the Presidents pulled away.

Parker grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Lauren Gilbert scored 14 points for W&J.

Waynesburg was led by Andrea Orlosky, who scored 14 points. Erin Joyce and Brooke Fuller each had 13 points.

California 69, Gannon 55: California, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 69-55 win at Gannon in a PSAC West Division game.

Cal (5-1, 11-1), which lost Wednesday at Edinboro, built an eight-point lead at the end of one quarter against Gannon and kept the Golden Knights playing catch-up the rest of the way.

Seairra Barrett, who played a fine all-around game, led four Cal players in double figures with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also had seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Jiahna Flood-Francis followed in the scoring column with 14 points, and point guard Bianca Jasper had 11 points, four assists and four steals. D.J. Hahn came off the bench to score 10 points.

Gannon (2-5, 6-8) was led by Nicole LaCava with 16 points. The Golden Knights shot 47 percent but had 27 turnovers.

Gannon scored seven of the first nine points in the third quarter to trim their deficit to 40-36, but Cal countered with an 8-2 run to push the lead up to 48-38 on a three-pointer by Flood-Francis. Gannon, which was held to 11 fourth-quarter points, never made a serious threat over the final 15 minutes.
