In track and field
Washington & Jefferson’s Hannah Lacey set a new school record and another personal record in separate events at the Spire Midwest Open.
Lacey, a Beth-Center High School graduate, finished in eight place and set a W&J record in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:48.63. Lacey then ran the 400-meter with a personal-best time of 1:03.21.
Ben Heim, a Washington High School graduate, placed fifth out of 84 competitors in the 800-meter. Heim finished in 1:56.53.
James returns
to practice
LeBron James is back in full-contact defensive drills in practice with the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time since the four-time NBA MVP strained his groin.
James will miss his 16th consecutive game Sunday when the Lakers host the Phoenix Suns.
The 34-year-old James has been out since Christmas due to the most significant injury of his 16-year NBA career. He had never missed more than 13 games in an entire season.
James practiced with his teammates Saturday at their training complex, but won’t return this weekend. The Lakers’ next game after that is Tuesday at home against Philadelphia.
James was selected this week to be a starter and a team captain in the NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte on Feb. 17.
Lions linebacker charged with assault
Police say Trevor Bates of the Detroit Lions was arrested in New York for failing to pay a taxi fare and then punching a police officer in the face.
The 25-year-old linebacker was charged with assault, resisting arrest and theft of service after police were called around 3 a.m. Saturday at a hotel near New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pound player was taken to a hospital in Queens for evaluation.
The Lions’ general manager, Bob Quinn, says in a statement that the team is aware of Bates’ arrest but has no further comment for now.
Bates is in his first season with the Lions, appearing in nine games.
The player was awaiting arraignment later Saturday. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.
Family affair
Golden State star Stephen Curry said he and brother Seth Curry of the Portland Trail Blazers will be taking part in the three-point contest during the NBA’s All-Star weekend.
They’ll be squaring off Feb. 16 in Charlotte, their hometown.
Stephen Curry told ESPN that the contest “will be fun with the Curry brothers,” adding that he knows his brother is “going to be gunning for me, though. That’s the problem.”
The NBA has not released the full field of competitors for the All-Star Saturday Night events.
This will be the sixth time Stephen Curry has been in the contest and the first for Seth Curry. Their father, Dell Curry, was a two-time participant.
