Small college basketball roundup: Cal women rally late, edge The Rock

D.J. Hahn made a go-ahead three-pointer with 3:09 remaining, Jiahna Flood-Francis made six free throws down the stretch and the 16th-ranked California University women’s basketball team erased a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 78-72 victory over upset-minded Slippery Rock in a PSAC West Division game Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.

Slippery Rock (4-3, 6-7), sparked by a 29 points from Brooke Hinderliter, led 62-52 with 5:56 remaining. California (5-1, 11-1), however, rallied by scoring nine unanswered points and took the lead at 65-64 on Hahn’s three-pointer.

Flood-Francis, who made 10 of 11 free throws en route to a 14-point game, kept the Vulcans in front down the stretch.

Gina Vallecorsa led four Cal players in double figures with 20 points. Abbey Sporio had 17 points, Seairra Barrett finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hahn also grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Vulcans made only five of 33 three-point attempts but were 23 of 32 at the free-throw line compared to Slippery Rock’s 7-for-8. The Rock shot 53 percent but had 21 turnovers to Cal’s 10.

Saint Vincent 69, Waynesburg 64: Paige Montrose scored 16 points and Saint Vincent held off a fourth-quarter comeback to edge host Waynesburg 69-64 and remain undefeated in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play.

Saint Vincent (6-0, 12-2) was cruising with a 38-27 halftime lead and a 56-43 edge entering the fourth quarter. Waynesburg (1-5, 3-11), which has lost five in a row, made a late charge and closed to within 66-63 following a free throw by Erin Joyce with 49 seconds remaining. After a Saint Vincent turnover, Waynesburg had a chance to tie but Andrea Orlosky was fouled with 19 seconds remaining. She made one of two free throws to cut the Saint Vincent lead to 66-64.

South Fayette graduate Carlee Kilgus then made two free throws for Saint Vincent with 18 seconds left and the Bearcats held on down the stretch.

Waynesburg, which made nine of 23 three-pointers, couldn’t overcome 12-point first quarter. The Yellow Jackets were led by Haley Porter’s 15 points. Elena McDermott came off the bench to score 12 points, and Monica Starre and kacey Kastroll each had 10 points.

Men’s results

Slippery Rock 95, California 84: John Warren scored a game-high 29 points and Slippery Rock used some torrid long-range shooting to defeat California 95-84 in the PSAC’s West Division.

Slippery Rock (6-1, 9-5) made 15 of 26 three-point field goals and shot 60 percent from the field.

Cal (3-4, 5-8) had four players score in doduble figures but the Vulcans used only seven players. Slippery Rock held a 40-0 edge in bench scoring.

Brent Pegram led Cal with 25 points and Zyan Collins followed with 23. Donte’ Williams had 19 points and Collin MacAdams 17 for the Vulcans. Only four of Cal’s seven players scored.

Warren made six of The Rock’s three-pointers. Jared Armstrong, who scored 17 points, had five three-pointers.

Saint Vincent 88, Waynesburg 75: Tom Kromka had 28 points and 10 rebounds to power PAC leader Saint Vincent to an 88-75 win at Waynesburg.

Saint Vincent (6-0, 13-2) shot 55 percent for the game and forged a 46-32 lead at halftime. The Bearcats have won five in a row.

Waynesburg (3-3, 4-10) was led in scoring by Matt Popeck’s 21 points. Brennan Smith followed with 14 points and Noah Gearhart had 12.

Saint Vincent made 24 of 30 free throws compared to Waynesburg 6-for-9.
