LETTER: Give older workers a chance

Age discrimination is the only type of discrimination that doesn’t discriminate. Doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, man or woman or anything else that can be considered why a person is subject to discrimination.

According to a recent report by the Bureau of Labor people between the ages of 55 and 64 spent 35 hours a week looking for a new job. According to an AARP survey, 75 percent of workers over 50 who were not hired believe age was the primary factor. The same AARP study reported that 45 percent of respondents who applied for a new job were asked the year they graduated high school or college – a “legal” way for an employer to determine age. AARP also reported that workers over 50 were afraid to ask for a raise in the fear of losing their jobs and work for less money doing the same job as a younger employee.

I hope hiring managers take the time to read this and realize that older workers have a tremendous amount to offer. Don’t cast them off as outdated. They represent experience and wisdom that can only come with the knowledge that is learned over time.
