High school basketball roundup: Indians double dip for win over Big Macs
Peters Township’s undefeated girls basketball team had three players with double-doubles Wednesday night as the Indians completed their Class 6A Section 2 schedule with a 75-27 road victory over Canon-McMillan.
Makenna Marisa led the way with a 20 points and Isabella Mills was right behind with 19 points to go with 10 rebounds. Mackenzie Lehman tossed in 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Journey Thompson had 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Indians finished with a 14-0 record in section play and improved to 21-0 on the season with one game remaining before the WPIAL playoffs.
The Indians led 21-12 after one quarter and then broke the game wide open by outscoring the Big Macs 23-1 in the second quarter for a 44-13 halftime advantage.
Jenna Cromp’s eight points led the Big Macs. Canon-McMillan ends at 5-9 in the section. The Big Macs are 8-12 overall with a pair of nonsection games remaining.
Beth-Center 45, McGuffey 31: Elizabeth Trump and Anna Sloan each scored 10 points as Beth-Center built its lead in the section quarter to defeat McGuffey, 45-31, in Class 3A Section 2.
Beth-Center (8-5, 12-8), which already clinched a playoff berth, outscored the Highlanders 16-3 in the second quarter to lead 24-11 at halftime.
Abby Donnelly scored 10 points for McGuffey (5-8, 8-11).
Boys results
Jeannette 39, Chartiers-Houston 33: After taking a one-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Chartiers-Houston couldn’t hold on down the stretch as it lost to Class 2A Section 2 foe Jeannette, 39-33.
The Bucs, who fell to 5-6 in the section and 10-10 overall, can still clinch a playoff berth with a victory over Carmichaels Friday night. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Jeannette (8-3, 12-9) went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to retake the lead and pull away in the final minutes. Marcus Barnes led the Jayhawks with 12 points, the only player for either team to score in double figures.
Evan Simpson led Chartiers-Houston with eight points.
Carmichaels 75, Bentworth 31: The Carmichaels boys team lived by the three-point shot Wednesday. And the Mikes were living large.
Carmichaels made 17 three-pointers, all by five players, and rolled to a 75-31 victory over host Bentworth in Class 2A Section 2.
Dylan Wilson led the way for the long-range shooting Mikes (3-8, 10-10), who reached the .500 mark for the season. Wilson had a team-high 15 points that included four three-pointers. Matt Barrish had 14 points and matched Wilson with four treys. Christopher Barrish also scored 14 points with three baskets from behind the stripe.
The Mikes led 23-13 after one quarter and increased it to 45-20 at halftime.
Cameron Bell led Bentworth (0-11, 0-20) in scoring with eight points.
Propel Montour 71, Avella 50:
Propel Montour had too much Corey Simmons and Lahlil Kerr for Avella.
Simmons poured in a game-high 40 points and Kerry chipped in with 24 as propel Montour defeated Avella 71-50 in a nonsection game. Simmons and Kerr combined to score all but seven of propel’s points.
Avella (6-15) led 17-15 after one quarter but Propel Montour took control of the game by outscoring the Eagles 22-6 in the second quarter to take a 37-23 lead.
The Eagles had three players in double figures, led by Brandon Samol’s 15 points. Tyler Cerciello scored 12 points and Owen English 10.
