Charleroi council gets resignation letter from Celaschi

CHARLEROI – For the third time in the past six months, Charleroi is looking for a new council member.
Shortly before they convened for their monthly meeting Wednesday, council members learned that Larry Celaschi submitted a letter of resignation, effective the same day. Celashchi, who wasn’t present for the meeting, had three years left on a four-year term.
Council members unanimously approved Celaschi’s resignation and will accept applications for the open position until March 1. The council is expected to select a replacement for Celaschi at its March 6 meeting.
Celaschi said his original intent was to resign at the end of December, but he decided to stay longer until the council voted to enter the Early Intervention Program for communities with financial problems. Last year, he recommended Charleroi consider selling its municipal authority to a private company.
“I appreciated the opportunity to have worked with all involved,” said Celaschi, who said he resigned because “it was time.”
“I will value the accomplishments of the past council I served with and the battles we fought in order to get things done. We didn’t always see eye to eye. I hope now, as I did then, that everybody works for the betterment of our community and the employees,” he said.
During 2018, former mayor Nancy Ellis replaced Randy DiPiazza, who resigned in September. Martin Gassner then took the place of Debbie Buck, who submitted a letter of resignation in November.
