West Greene’s Simms makes it 3 in a row
Bill Simms made it three straight at the Tri-County Athletic Directors Coach of the Year Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn in Southpointe Sunday night.
The West Greene softball coach won the Softball Coach of the Year award after leading the Pioneers to the PIAA Class A title with a victory over Williams Valley last year.
Other coach winners were Scott Roebuck of Brownsville in baseball; Lance Getsy of Charleroi in football; Bert Kendall of Peters Township in girls basketball, Dan Bosnic of Monessen in boys basketball, Mandy Hartman if Frazier in volleyball; and Joey Vigliotti of Burgettstown in wrestling.
The baseball and softball awards were based on the 2018 season.
The PIAA Class 6A champion Peters Township girls basketball team received the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner award.
Chris Duggan received the Meghan Canterna Memorial Award as Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.
The Bill Christy Memorial Award for Excellence in Officiating went to Robert Fee and Ron Tyburski.
Mark John of Laurel Highlands was this year’s selection for the Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Award.
Joe Tuscano received the Roy Gillespie Memorial Special Award.
Colin Walters of McGuffey was honored with the Bill Christy Sportsmanship Award.
Receiving a plaque as Olympic Sports Coach of the Year were Amy Casciola of Peters Township field hockey and Joe Winans of South Fayette cross country.
The Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Scholarship Winners were Abigail Cooper of Fort Cherry, Kasey Scears of Chartiers-Houston, Helina VanBibber of South Fayette, McKenna Lampe of West Greene, Cameron Cernuska of Jefferson-Morgan, Dominic Fundy of Beth-Center, Daniel Layton of Waynesburg and Matthew Barrish of Carmichaels..
Special Recognition went to Kaci Alderson and Kasey Scears of Chartiers-Houston, Allyn Bezjak and Annnalia Paoli of Albert Gallatin, Christian Clutter of McGuffey, Ryan Coe, Jamie Diven and Mike Trimbur of South Fayette, Skye Eicher and Logan Hartman of Frazier, Jadyn Hartner of Fort Cherry, Madison Lampe, McKenna Lampe, Jade Renner, Madison Renner and Kaitlyn Rizor of West Greene, Thayne Lawrence of Frazier, Gerrit Nijenhuis of Canon-McMillan, Madison Telegraphis and Dana Vatakis of Monessen, Anna Vogt of Ringgold, Dan Walker Jr. of Washington and Cullin Woytovich of Charleroi.
