High school baseball roundup: Bentworth completes comeback, stuns Burgettstown

In its final at-bat to complete a comeback, visiting Bentworth scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to upend Burgettstown, 14-13, in a Class 2A Section 1 baseball game Wednesday afternoon.

Bentworth (2-1, 5-3) trailed 13-8 entering the seventh.

Shawn Dziak led the Bearcats with three hits and four RBI. He also scored a pair of runs. Austyn Pistilli had two hits and drove in two. Justin Kisner went 2-for-3.

Burgettstown (0-4, 2-5) had success against the six different pitchers used by Bentworth. Dante Gianfrancesco, who finished with four hits, and Luke Lounder each had a pair of doubles.

The Blue Devils finished with 19 hits and led 12-4 after four innings.

Baldwin 7, Canon-McMillan 5: Baldwin erupted for six runs in the first inning and hung on for a 7-5 upset of Canon-McMillan in a Section 3 game in Class 6A.

Canon-McMillan, the defending WPIAL and PIAA champion, fell to 2-1 in the section and 6-3 overall. Baldwin moved to 1-3 in the section and 3-3 overall.

Andy Sopata had a two-run double and Kieran Schmidt a two-run single in Baldwin’s first inning. Seven different Highlanders scored a run and no one had more than one hit.

Canon-McMillan rallied for a run in the fourth and four in the fifth inning but couldn’t get any closer.

Tyler Greenleaf drove in three runs and Noah Burke scored twice for the Big Macs.

Waynesburg 12, Washington 0: Luke Robinson struck out 12 and did not allow a run in Waynesburg’s 12-0, five-inning win over Washington in a Section 3 game in Class AAA.

Tyler Switalski went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs for the Raiders (2-1, 3-2). Trevor Stephenson and Ryley Metheny each went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run. Jesse Johnson and Kyle Shriver each scored twice.

Wash High fell to 0-4 and 1-7.

Carmichaels 13, Monessen 2: Gavin Pratt had two triples among his three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times to help Carmichaels drop Monessen, 13-2, in a 5-inning non-section game.

Matt Barrish tripled, singled, drove in three and scored twice for the Mikes (6-1), who scored five times in the first inning and four times in the third. Collin Reynolds had a double and drove in two runs. Dylan Wilson scored twice.

Cam Frolo went 2-for-3 and scored twice for Monessen (3-4).

Beth-Center 9, Charleroi 6: A five-run fifth sparked Beth-Center to a 9-6 victory over Charleroi in a Section 3-AAA game.

Noah Meyers went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs. All his hits came on bunt singles. He drove in a run in the fifth and Chase Malanosky singled in two more for Beth-Center (3-1, 3-3). David Morris had a double and Dom Fundy a triple.

Charleroi is 1-2 and 4-3.

Chartiers-Houston 8, Brownsville 4: Chartiers-Houston scored in each of the first four innings on the way to an 8-4 victory over Brownsville in a Section 1-AA game.

Austin Kuslock doubled, singled, scored and batted in two runs for the Bucs (4-0, 5-2). Jimmy Sadler tripled and Matt Rieger had three hits and two RBI.

D.J. Zimkosky accounted for all the runs for Brownsville (1-2, 5-2) with an RBI double in the first inning and a three-run homer in the seventh.

Avella 14, Mapletown 4: Derek Tarolli led a solid offensive day for Avella in five-inning 14-4 win over Mapletown in a Class A Section 2 game.

Tarolli went 3-for-4, all singles, as the Eagles scored six runs in both the first and fourth innings.

Nick Pollock struck out five in five innings to earn the win for Avella (2-2, 2-3).

Caly Manear went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for Mapletown (0-3, 0-6).

Frazier 17, Fort Cherry 15: Trailing 9-1 after two innings, Frazier climbed back and scored six runs in the final inning to defeat host Fort Cherry, 17-15, in a Class 2A Section 1 game.

Fort Cherry (1-2, 4-4) rebuilt its lead after falling behind in the fourth inning with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

It then went south for the Rangers.

Chase Hazelbaker, who earned the win for Frazier (2-2. 4-3), went 5-for-5 with four RBI and scored four runs.
