The Observer-Reporter asked Facebook friends to respond to a question about an issue in the news. On Monday, we asked: “What are your thoughts about President Trump filing suit to block House Democrats from obtaining his financial records?” Here are some of the responses:
Kim Keller: I believe, when they take PUBLIC office, college transcripts and their financials, including holdings, stocks, bond interests in companies and tax returns, should be available to the PUBLIC! FULL TRANSPARENCY!
Lisa Rumble-Miller: I am all for President Trump filing suit to stop this. To this day, I find no point in any of them releasing their tax returns to anyone but the IRS. They prove nothing. With the complicated tax rules, which includes various allowable deductions, what is anyone going to see other then a summary? In my opinion it’s not my business what his finances are any more than it’s anybody’s business what mine or yours are. I believe the biggest problem that people have with Trump is that he tells it like it is, can’t be bought, and keeps doing what he believes is best for this country; we’re all used to be being fed lies from all of them. Everyone claims he’s dividing the country. I think the mainstream Democrats have done a fine job of that all by themselves. Grow up and do your job.
Jacky Young: The person who holds the highest office in the nation should have the utmost transparency. As a contributing taxpayer, I want to have confidence in the person ruling our nation. Remember no man or woman should ever be above the law.
Eric McGrosky: … the law is quite clear, Under Section 6103 of our tax code, Treasury officials “shall” turn over the tax returns “upon written request” of the chair of either congressional tax committee or the federal employee who runs Congress’s Joint Committee on Taxation. And there is a law requiring every federal “employee” who touches the tax system to do their duty or be removed from office. He is not above the law …
Michael Moran: It’s nobody’s business what he makes. He’s been donating his salary to different organizations. Something no Democrat would think of doing. Instead of wasting more taxpayers dollars on a witch hunt the Democrats need to do constructive things and not destructive things. Quit being a bunch of sore losers and move on!
Jeff Kerstetter: The person in charge of U.S. economic policy should as a matter of due course disclose their finances in the interest of transparency and public faith. This isn’t that hard to understand.
Oren Spiegler: Lie #1: I will release my tax returns (as every president has done for 50 years). Lie #2: I cannot release my tax returns because I am under audit by the IRS. (The IRS has stated that being under audit does not preclude any taxpayer from divulging information on their tax returns). What do you have to hide, Mr. President? What is in the returns that will disgrace you?
Crystal Fidazzo: Why shouldn’t he file suit? This is nothing more than presidential harassment. His financial records prior to becoming president are none of our business. Barack Obama wouldn’t let anybody see his college records. They’ve been under lock and key since before he was elected. This is just the Democrats covering for the fact that they have no vision for the American people and they absolutely hate the fact that Trump does. They hate him more than they love their own country. They don’t care how this country is been ripped apart for the last two years.
Virginia Davis: It’s no one’s business what his tax returns are, and if he does have to show his then everyone, including (Nancy) Pelosi and (Chuck) Schumer need to be forced to show theirs.
