Monessen’s Whitlock transfers to Belle Vernon
Devin Whitlock electrified crowds on the football field and the basketball court during a stellar freshman season at Monessen, but the two-sport star has enrolled at a fellow Mon-Valley school, Belle Vernon.
Leopards athletic director Matt Humbert confirmed that Whitlock has enrolled at Belle Vernon Area High School but not started classes yet.
Whitlock helped the Greyhounds to semifinal appearances in the WPIAL and PIAA tournaments in basketball, and guided Monessen to a near upset of Jeanette in the WPIAL football playoffs.
He averaged 18 points per game in basketball and was named to numerous all-star teams.
Greyhounds football coach Mikey Blainefield said nothing had been confirmed to him, but he wished Whitlock well.
“I haven’t heard anything official yet,” Blainefield said. “If it is true, Devin is a once in a generation type of talent. I am proud to have coached him as a Greyhound.
“The people of Belle Vernon will soon find out that he is much more than a phenomenal athlete. He is well mannered, loved amongst his peers, and a good student. I truly wish Devin all the best if he is leaving Monessen. I hope that he is able to accomplish all that he hopes for in his new environment.”
Monessen basketball coach Dan Bosnic echoed Blainefield’s statement in wishing Whitlock well.
“Devin is a really talented kid,” Bosnic said. “He was terrific for us as a freshman last season. We wish him well, but are focused on our players and trying to help them improve.”
It is unclear if the transfer was or will be contested by Monessen.
