Jean Haines Roberts
1928 – 2013
Jean Haines Roberts, 85, of Burgettstown, Hanover Township, passed away peacefully Friday morning, May 24, 2013, in Humbert Lane Nursing Centre, South Strabane Township.
She was born March 13, 1928, in Pine Bank, Greene County, a daughter of the late D. Clyde and Lena Smith Haines.
Mrs. Roberts joined the former Florence United Presbyterian Church in 1957, where she served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and janitor with her husband for many years. After the closing of Florence United Presbyterian Church, she became a member of Paris Presbyterian Church.
She was an avid volunteer her entire life. She served as the coordinator of Burgettstown Area Food Pantry since 1982 and received the Burgettstown Community Library Good Egg Award in 2011. She worked on the Hanover Township election board, served on the board of directors for Northwest Medical Center in Atlasburg, Burgettstown Service Unit of the Salvation Army and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years with her husband until his health failed.
Mrs. Roberts befriended her neighbors and the community. She dedicated her life to her family and others and loved all of those she came in contact with. Her family and grandchildren were especially dear to her and her cat, Charley, was her constant companion and a comfort after her husband passed away.
On January 21, 1950, she married Robert B. Roberts, who passed away August 28, 2008.
Surviving are three sons, Robert L. Roberts and wife Tina of Plano, Texas, Ronald A. Roberts and wife Theresa of Burgettstown and Michael B. Roberts and wife Nancy of Wake Forest, N.C.; two daughters, Beth Engel and husband William of Langeloth and Anne Waters and husband Gary of Burgettstown; 10 grandchildren, Tammy Youngblood, Billy Engel, Laura Lawrence, Matt, Joshua, Bradley, Nate and Rian Roberts and Alexandra and Danielle Thorne; five stepgrandchildren, Heather Watson, April Barr, Julie Jafri and Daniel and Bernadette Waters; five great-grandchildren, Natasha Morris, Shawn Youngblood, Torian and Payton Korns and Allison Lawrence; a great-great-granddaughter, Chloe Young; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Brant and Blaze Barr and Ethan, Ezra and Benjamin Watson; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are two brothers, Joseph and Raymond Haines; a sister, Mary Stilwell; and an infant son, Timothy.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Lee and Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, with the Rev. Christina Hosler and the Rev. Dana Hiles officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Florence.
