Don’t call her Trinity Ward. Call her Madame Butterfly. For she dominated that swimming race during her four-year career at Mt. Lebanon. Ward was a four-time WPIAL champion and two-time PIAA gold medalist in the 100-yard butterfly. This winter, she clocked a 54.44 time and just missed taking down the oldest WPIAL record on the books for the butterfly. She missed the mark set by Melanie Buddemeyer of Penn Hills in 1983 by a mere .28. At the state meet, Ward also guided the Blue Devils’ 200-yard medley relay team of Hannah Russell, Maddie Dorish and Sophia Donati to victory in 1:43.04. The unit also was the WPIAL champion. Ward also took the bronze in the 100 freestyle at states and helped the 200 freestyle relay grab sixth place. Ward helped Lebo to two WPIAL team runner-up trophies during her career. This winter, the Blue Devils lost to 11-time champion North Allegheny by the slimmest margin to date, 313-254.5. In that meet, in addition to winning the butterfly, Ward was the silver medalist in the 100 freestyle. She helped her relays win gold in the 200 medley and silver in the 400 free. A multiple athlete as well as academic All-American, Ward will continue her career at the University of Kentucky. “Nothing is going to stop her,” Lebo coach Tom Donati predicted. “Trinity is such a great, hard worker. She will swim through a brick wall for you. She’s had an amazing career. It has been a great ride.”
