Members of Washington High School’s Class of 2019, the school’s 152nd graduating class, will receive diplomas at commencement Wednesday. The ceremony, for 106 graduates, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Daniel Gysi, son of Dan Gysi and Laura Spack, is valedictorian.

In the fall of 2018, he received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Gysi placed among the top 50,000 students out of the 1.6 million nationally who entered the 2019 competition.

While in high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society; served as the captain of the JV Academic Team; participated in the math competition; was president of the Prexie Performers; served on student council, and participated in Teen Outreach all four years.

Daniel received a Presidential Merit Scholarship and is planning to attend Washington & Jefferson College with an undecided major.

Class salutatorian is Shayela Harmon, daughter of Anthony Harmon and Tonya Sizemore.

She is a recipient of several awards and scholarships, including the American Association of University Women’s Eva and Iva Cowley Scholarship; the Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award; the ABCDEF Scholarship; the “Pooch Hinerman” Memorial Award, and a Prexie Pride Foundation Award. She served as senior class secretary, president of the National Honor Society, and treasurer and secretary of student council. She participated in varsity tennis and Spanish Club.

Harmon plans to attend St. Vincent College and major in criminal justice.
