Police investigate porch fire in Canonsburg early Monday
Police are investigating a suspicious porch fire in Canonsburg early Monday morning.
Canonsburg fire Chief Tim Solobay said crews responded just before 1 a.m. to 534 S. Central Ave., for a porch that was on fire.
“The whole front of the house was pretty much going when we got there,” he said. “It went unnoticed for a while, I think, but a passerby was out walking and saw it.”
Solobay said the house was unoccupied and has been for sale “for a while.” He said the fire was of a “suspicious incendiary” nature, since there was no power or outlets on the front porch where it originated.
“We have no reason to believe anything electrical started it,” he said.
A state police fire marshal and Canonsburg police will be investigating, Solobay said.
The occupied house next door didn’t have any major internal damage, Solobay said, but it did have slight external damage to the electrical service.
Assisting Canonsburg at the scene were firefighters from North Strabane, Houston, Muse and Peters Township. They were on scene for more than three hours, Solobay said, with no injuries reported.
“Last evening’s call was a shining example of teamwork and collaboration,” Solobay said in a Facebook post. “Most importantly everyone went home safe!”
