Range Resources Corp. has a large presence in Western Pennsylvania and Texas, but is now a little smaller in both.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based natural gas producer has laid off about 40 employees from its offices in the two states, spokesman Mark Windle said in an email Thursday morning. Low prices for natural gas over multiple years was the reason given.

The company said in a statement: “A persistent, multi-year impact of low commodity prices has required Range to decrease spending in accordance with a reduced operations schedule. Unfortunately, this includes the difficult decision to reduce staff in several of our office locations.

“These times have been challenging, but nothing is more difficult than the decisions that impact our employees, and we do not take these decisions lightly.”

Windle said those who were laid off Tuesday will receive severance agreements.

Range has its regional headquarters in Southpointe. It is one of the biggest gas production companies in Western Pennsylvania. The company has an estimated 400 employees in this state and more than 770 overall.
