Household chemical collection scheduled
Clean out the closets, the garage, the basement and the garden shed! A July 20 collection event organized by the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) will provide residents of the area with an opportunity to safely and cost-effectively dispose of common household chemicals such as cleaners, paints, stains and varnishes, batteries, motor oil and pesticides.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an average home can easily accumulate 100 pounds of products containing potentially hazardous chemicals.
The next PRC household chemical collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Wild Things Park, One Washington Federal Way, Washington.
The cost to safely dispose of materials at this collection is $3 a gallon (a few exceptions apply), cash only. Once collected and processed by the certified contractor, materials will be recycled, incinerated or safely disposed in special landfills.
Since launching household chemical collections in 2003, PRC and its partners have collected and safely disposed of nearly 5 million pounds of chemicals from approximately 50,000 households in Western Pennsylvania.
