Javier Baez hit a go-ahead, three-run homer and four Cubs relievers combined for one-hit ball over the final four innings, lifting Chicago to a 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

The game started out as a slugfest in sweltering conditions at Wrigley Field before the wind suddenly shifted in the seventh, the temperature dropped and the pitchers took command.

Anthony Rizzo had two hits and drove in two runs and Robel Garcia added an RBI triple as NL Central-leading Chicago improved to 7-1 since the All-Star break.

Manny Machado hit a two-run shot for his 200th career homer and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Hunter Renfroe also connected for San Diego.

Jose Quintana (8-7) won his fourth straight start despite allowing five runs on eight hits and three homers in five innings.

Brandon Kintzler, Steve Cishek and Pedro Strop each worked a scoreless inning. Closer Craig Kimbrel worked around two walks in the ninth – getting Machado to line out to third to end it – for his sixth save.

San Diego starter Joey Lucchesi (7-5) allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings as his career-high streak of 12 straight outings of at least five innings came to an end.

Baez hit his 24th homer in the fourth for a 6-4 lead.

N.Y. Mets 11, San Francisco 4: Pete Alonso came off the bench and hit his 33rd home run, setting the Mets rookie record for RBIs as New York beat San Francisco 11-4 to end the Giants’ seven-game winning streak.

Dominic Smith, Jeff McNeil and Todd Frazier all went deep as the Mets powered up with four home runs, one day after losing 1-0 in 10 innings. Walker Lockett (1-1) pitched five mostly sharp innings to earn his first major league victory.

Pablo Sandoval singled four times for the Giants. San Francisco (49-50) had won 14 of 16 and was attempting to get above .500 for the first time this season.

Alonso’s three-run homer off Derek Holland gave him 75 RBIs, one more than Darryl Strawberry had as a Mets rookie in 1983. Alonso already holds the franchise rookie records for home runs and extra-base hits.

Lockett gave up five hits and one run after being called up from Triple-A Syracuse before the game. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

Jeff Samardzija (7-8) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. Samardzija has lost all six career starts against the Mets.

N.Y. Yankees 11, Colorado 5: The Yankees are as hot as the weather, torching Colorado pitching for the second straight day.

Edwin Encarnacion chased Anthony Senzatela with a two-run double in a five-run second inning, and New York romped over the Rockies 11-5 for its fifth straight win.

On an afternoon with a 94-degree gametime temperature, the highest for the Yankees this season, New York went ahead when Aaron Judge doubled in a run on Senzatela’s 10th pitch and took a 9-0 lead by the fourth.

Encarnacion added an RBI double in the seventh and has 21 RBIs in 24 games since Yankees acquired him from Seattle, including seven in the weekend series. DJ LeMahieu raised his AL-leading average to .334 with three hits, giving him five in two games against his former team.

New York began the day with a nine-game AL East lead, its largest in seven years, and increased its best-in-the-majors record to 64-33. The Yankees are 14-0-1 in their last 15 home series and are on their fifth winning streak of five games or more.

Colorado has lost six straight and 13 of 15 while getting outscored 127-64.
