McGuffey’s Weiss part of HOF class

Jeff Weiss will be inducted into the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 14.

Weiss, a McGuffey graduate, will join six other members to be inducted.

In his time at Slippery Rock before graduating in 2009, Weiss was a seven-time All-American, a national runner-up in cross country, a two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference MVP and seven-time individual PSAC champion.

Weiss is a first-ballot selection.

He still holds records at Slippery Rock for the 3,000-meter indoor run (8:10.90) and the 5,000-meter outdoor run (14:04.94).

At The Meadows

Lyons Sentinel blasted through the soggy Lightning Lane to score for Tim Tetrick in 1:51, matching the stake record for the Meadow Cheer, a $183,040 Pennsylvania Sires Stake for freshman filly pacers, Tuesday at The Meadows. Rocknificent worked hard to capture the other division, giving Tetrick a stake sweep.

Rocknificent kicked by Beyond Ecstasy in the lane to defeat her by 1/2 length in 1:52.2, with Marloe Hanover third.

Aaron Merriman collected four wins on the 13-race card.

Waynesburg hires Uhl as assistant coach

Waynesburg University head men’s basketball coach Tim Fusina recently announced the hiring of AJ Uhl as his assistant coach. Uhl comes to Waynesburg with coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels and worked with Fusina at his last two head coaching stops.

Uhl most recently served as the associate head coach of the men’s basketball team at California Lutheran during the 2018-19 season. He was the assistant coach for the Kingsmen during the 2017-18 campaign.

Prior to California Lutheran, Uhl was an assistant men’s basketball coach for Centenary University (N.J.) during the 2016-17 season, where he helped guide the team to a 12-14 overall record. His responsibilities at Centenary included leading all aspects of recruiting, academic coordination, player development, film breakdown and exchange, scouting, practice and game planning.

Before moving to the college ranks, Uhl spent one year (2015-16) at Comsewogue High School, his alma mater, in New York as the head coach of the junior varsity team, assistant coach on the varsity team and offensive coordinator.

Uhl graduated from Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. As a member of the Knights, Uhl was a four-year letterman on a team that had the best four-year record in school history (82-32). He was part of a 2012 team that won the ECAC Championship and led the team in three-point shooting percentage during the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons.
