Pony baseball
Jake Perchinsky and Zeke Watkins each drove in three runs Wednesday as Chartiers-Houston Perchinsky defeated Chartiers-Houston Daley, 14-7, in the Founders Pony League.
Watkins belted a three-run triple and Anthony Romano had three hits, including a double, for Perchinsky (1-1).
Suspended WVU coordinator apologizes
Suspended West Virginia defensive coordinator Vic Koenning apologized Wednesday after a player alleged he made a series of insensitive remarks, including against Hispanics.
Koenning was placed on administrative leave Tuesday after safety Kerry Martin posted the allegations on his Twitter account about Koenning.
“I never intended anything I said or did to offend or be insensitive,” Koenning said in a statement on Twitter Wednesday. “But KJ’s Tweet reminded me that sometimes intent is not always clearly communicated.”
Martin said the latest example of offensive comments by Koenning happened Monday, when the defensive coordinator shared a conversation he had with his son about protests over racial injustice. Martin, who is Black, said Koenning’s “exact words were, ‘if people did not want to get tear gassed, or push back by the police then they shouldn’t be outside protesting.'”
Martin also said Koenning called him “retarded” during a 2019 workout.
5 withdraw from PGA event
The caddies for Brooks Koepka and Graeme McDowell have tested positive for the coronavirus, leading both major champions to withdraw Wednesday from the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
“The snowball is getting a little bit bigger,” McDowell said as he began the 1,200-mile drive from the TPC River Highlands to his home in Orlando, Florida.
McDowell tested negative, though he suspects he has the virus and decided to drive home to start his self-isolation. He said Ricky Elliott, a longtime friend from Northern Ireland and Koepka’s caddie, received a positive result and that Koepka has withdrawn.
Rockies’ Blackmon tests positive
All-Star outfielder Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies has become the first Major League Baseball player known to have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Blackmon is a four-time All-Star slugger who hit .314 with 32 home runs and 86 RBIs last season. He turns 34 on July 1, the day players are set to begin reporting for the resumption of spring training.
Redskins remove all mentions of Marshall
The Washington Redskins are removing former owner George Preston Marshall from their Ring of Fame and striking all references to him on their website.
Marshall’s name has already been removed from the history wall at the team’s training facility in Ashburn, Virginia. The Ring of Fame is removing Marshall’s name from its stadium in Landover, Maryland.
It’s the latest move to cut ties with the legacy of the team’s racist founder, a segregationist who refused to integrate by signing Black players until “forced to do so” in 1962.
