Pitt, Penn State games postponed

No. 25 Florida State’s visit to Pitt for an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday has been postponed due to following COVID-19 testing issues within the Seminoles program.

The postponement is the third this week for Florida State.

The ACC adjusted its schedule after the announcement. Pitt’s game against Georgia Tech set for Tuesday has been shifted to Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets are having COVID-19 issues of their own.

Meanwhile, Penn State’s game Saturday against Michigan has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues within the Nittany Lions program.

Penn State announced that it had “paused all team-related activities.”

The Nittany Lions haven’t played since Dec. 30. They postponed Sunday’s game against Wisconsin as well as Tuesday’s game against Ohio State. And now they have announced that their next two games – Michigan on Saturday and Rutgers on Tuesday – are postponed.

Former pitcher John hospitalized

Tommy John has been battling COVID-19 for at least three weeks.

The 77-year-old former pitching great remains hospitalized near his home in Indio, Calif. He said he started to feel ill following a trip to Nashville before he was hospitalized Dec. 13.

John said he has had a bout of pneumonia. He said the biggest side effect at the moment is he has no strength in his legs. As far as some of the other symptoms associated with COVID-19, such as loss of taste or smell, John said he didn’t experience those.

John pitched for six teams over a 26-year career from 1963-89. He is widely known for undergoing the groundbreaking ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery on his left elbow in 1974 that bears his name. He went on to win 20 games three times.

In the NHL

The Montreal Canadiens will be able to play home games despite the Quebec government’s imposition of a curfew aimed at curbing COVID-19 in the province.

There will be no fans at games. Players and personnel will be tested daily.

Premier Francois Legault said the measures will take effect Saturday and remain in place until at least Feb. 8.

In the NFL

The Los Angeles Rams (10-6) want to maintain the advantage of not revealing their starting quarterback for Saturday’s playoff game until they step on the field in Seattle.

For an offense that’s looked mostly the same since 2018 except for its subtractions of talent, any amount of unpredictability seems important.

Coach Sean McVay and Jared Goff both declined Thursday to say whether Goff will return from a one-game absence with a broken thumb to start against the Seahawks (12-4).

Although backup John Wolford led the Rams to a season-ending win over Arizona last week, Goff emerged from this full week of practice at the Rams’ training complex looking like he’s ready to play.
