Joseph Matthew Dumbovich
Joseph Matthew Dumbovich, a lifelong resident of Slovan, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021, in the Donnell House, Washington.
He was born January 13, 1927, in Slovan, a son of the late Matthew Dumbovich and Mary Santeck Dumbovich.
Mr. Dumbovich was a proud veteran of World War II, serving from February 2, 1944 until May 6, 1946. He enlisted in the United States Navy soon after graduating from Burgettstown Union High School and attended boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. After receiving further training as a radio operator, he served aboard the USS Antaeus, then the USS Rescue. He was honorably discharged and received the Pacific Theater Ribbon with two stars, the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Dumbovich retired from National Steel’s Weirton Division, where he was a general foreman.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown. He was an active member of Slovan Veterans of Foreign Wars Barto Post 6553, held several offices and participated as a member of the VFW ceremonial color guard. He was also an assistant scoutmaster for Slovan BSA Troop 905.
Mr. Dumbovich is survived by his wife of 72 years, Betty Jane Waltl Dumbovich, to whom he was married June 14, 1949.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his six children, Joe Donovic (Jeanne), Darlene Duran (Lloyd), Robert Dumbovich (Mary), Ali Tomich (Craig), Judy Allison (Bob), Mark Dumbovich (Susan); grandchildren Joel Donovic (Catie), Laura Runk (Todd), Stephen Duran (Jamie), Kelly Ater (Jack), Matt Dumbovich (Sterling), Phil Kidd, Andrew Allison (Steff), Dr. Amy Coleman, PT D.P.T. (Greg), Jonathan Allison (Becca Lorusso), Julie Wade (Dan), Adam Dumbovich (Jen); also 16 great-grandchildren.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his granddaughter, Katie Dumbovich Haupl; sisters Anne Thiel, Helen Lonzo and Mildred DiRubbo.
To honor his wishes, a private prayer service will be held in Lee and Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, followed by internment with military honors in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.
