1961 – Three Washington County players – Moses Bailey (Trinity), Marty Schottenheimer (Fort Cherry) and Bob Abbott (Charleroi) – help the West All-Stars to a 34-14 victory over the East in the Big 33 football game in Hershey.
1973 – Jim Bibby of the Texas Rangers pitches a 6-0 no-hitter against the Oakland A’s.
1976 – Bruce Jenner sets the world record in the Olympic decathlon with 8,618 points, breaking Nikolai Avilov’s mark by 164 points.
1996 – The American softball team wins the gold medal, beating China 3-1 behind a controversial two-run homer from Dot Richardson in the first Olympic competition in that sport.
1999 – The Pittsburgh Steelers release offensive tack Jamain Stephens, the teams’ first-round draft pick in 1996.
2001 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade Jason Schmidt and Jon VanderWal to the San Francisco Giants for Armando Rios and Ryan Vogelsong.
