PITTSBURGH (AP) — Police say a Pittsburgh man attacked a transit bus driver with a metal bar after she told him he was short of the money needed to pay his fare.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for 32-year-old Joseph Shumba, who faces a preliminary hearing July 25 on two counts of aggravated assault.

Port Authority of Allegheny County police say Shumba tried to pay just half his fare then argued with the driver when she objected Saturday morning. Police say that’s when Shumba grabbed a metal bar used to move seats for riders in wheelchairs and began hitting the driver in the face, head and shoulders.

Police say another passenger intervened and was also hit, but prevented the attack on the driver from being more serious.

The driver has been treated and released for her injuries.
