U.S. Marine Corps vet enjoyed sports
Robert W. Smiddle, 92, of Avella, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013, in Canonsburg General Hospital, following a lengthy illness.
He was born August 1, 1920, in Houston, a son of William and Josephine Muster Smiddle.
Mrs. Smiddle was a 1939 graduate of East Washington High School.
He had worked as a transportation supervisor at the former Western Center in Canonsburg.
Mr. Smiddle was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg, and he enjoyed sports.
Married twice, his first wife Sarah Baker Smiddle, died in 1959. On July 7, 1963, he married Cecelia Nakoneczny, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Robert Smiddle Jr. (Donna) of Vernon Hill, Va.; two daughters, Dorothy Zanaglio of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Evelyn Lee O’Malley (John) of Bryan, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Patricia Ann Hullak (Andrew) and Margaret L. Quattro, both of Canonsburg, and JoLin Quidetto (Dan) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a stepson, Joseph Anthony Senkinc of Canonsburg; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, twins William “Bill” and George, James and Frank Smiddle and two sisters, Margaret Vinck and Minerva Bissell.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Chartiers Township. Full military honors will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902, Houston, combined honor guard.
