MAPLETOWN – Southeastern Greene School Board took action Monday on several personnel matters and approved an overnight camp for the girl’s varsity volleyball team.
The board approved a contract with Tracy Ducar, who was hired last month as the district’s instructional technology coach. Under the three-year contract, Ducar will receive a salary of $45,000 the first year, $46,000 the second year and $47,000 the third year.
Superintendent William Henderson said following the meeting that the technology coach is a new position and Ducar will be working with the teachers to integrate the use of technology into classroom instruction.
In other matters regarding personnel, the board approved the resignation of Kristin Jakiel, a junior-senior high English and social studies teacher. It also approved hiring Lois Mori, a student interpreter, to aid a student with special needs at $150 a day; and approved teachers Carolyn Sweeney, Gabrielle Bokat and Sheena Donley as elementary mentors to work with new teachers.
The board voted to approve a request by the girl’s varsity volleyball team to hold an overnight camp at the high school from Aug. 11 to 16.
Parents of two members of the team urged the board to approve the camp.
Becky Muilenberg, one parent, told the board the team now has coaches that really want to see the girls succeed. The overnight camp would allow the girls “to spend time together, be together and form a team,” she said.
Parent Mike Duranko also said the coaches have taken a lot of interest in the girls and it would be nice to see the district show support for a girls’ sport.
Girls who participate in the camp will not be required to stay at the school and will have the option to go home each night if they wish to. Board member J.R. Antill said this was one of his concerns, that members be permitted to go home at night.
Henderson said later that the volleyball team has never held a summer camp. This was the first year it has been proposed. In the past, the team has only held daily practices.
The board also approved Jessica Koon, a Waynesburg University student teacher, as a volunteer varsity volleyball coach pending receipt of the required clearances.
The board approved an agreement with Premier Power Solutions LLC to purchase electricity. The agreement was part of a joint purchase agreement through Intermediate Unit 1 and includes a 6 percent decrease in costs over the life of the three-year contract.
Additionally, the board approved a motion to approve the Intermediate Unit 1 as the district’s alternative education provider for the 2013-14 school year at a cost not to exceed $80,000.
