The state Department of Transportation has announced that the outbound Liberty Tunnels in Pittsburgh will close for about two in weeks in late July through mid-August.
The closure will begin at 10 p.m. July 26 and continue through 6 a.m. Aug. 12 so crews can replace the concrete arch at the exit of the tunnel. A concrete arch wall vent in the middle of the tunnel also will be replaced. The inbound tunnels will continue to close from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. each night during this period. The $18.8 million project will refurbish and repair the tunnel built in 1924. PennDOT said about 45,000 vehicles use the tunnels each day. A detour will be posted but PennDOT advises drivers to seek alternate routes. Commercial drivers should use the Parkway West and East as well as Route 51.
