Police and firefighters from North Strabane Township and Peters Township firefighters were called early Sunday for a report of a possible drowning at Canonsburg Lake.
A South Park woman told police she, her husband and son had been at the lake fishing for several hours and were cleaning up at about 1 a.m. Her husband had taken some equipment to their vehicle, which was parked on the Peters side of the lake, while she and her son continued cleaning their site.
The woman told police she could hear someone walking down the hillside and at first thought it was her husband. But after calling her husband’s name, she got no response. She called out a second time, again getting no answer.
She and her son both heard a large splash and could see rings in the water. Using a lantern for illumination, she told police she saw what looked like a silhouette of a person. The woman’s husband returned at that point, and they decided to call 911.
Fire crews searched the area at the edges of the lake. Peters firefighters launched a boat into the lake, but nothing was found. Police said the lake was only a few feet deep where the person may have gone into the water.
As they were preparing to leave the scene off McDowell Lane near Little Lake Theater, a firefighter spotted a car that had not been there earlier.
A man was seen coming out of the water. When police questioned him, he told them he thought it would be fun to go for a swim. They advised him that given the time of night, that was not a good idea. He was not believed to have been the person who was the subject of the search.
