1943 – Ray Forquer’s free throw with two seconds remaining gives Washington & Jefferson a 48-47 victory over West Virginia in Morgantown.

1956 – Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Jim Finks retires to become backfield coach at Notre Dame.

1959 – Lee Petty, driving an Oldsmobile, wins the first Daytona 500.

1963 – Norris Vactor makes a last-second heave from midcourt to give Washington High School a 51-49 victory over Trinity in the final basketball game in the Hillers’ old gymnasium.

1963 – West Greene’s Rick Sonneborn, the state’s leading scorer, tosses in 41 points in his final high school game as the Pioneers defeat Mapletown 65-63. Sonneborn’s scoring average is increased to 34.7 points per game.

1964 – Washington & Jefferson College extends its basketball winning streak to 10 games with a 63-61 victory over Eastern Michigan. Ed Cooper scores 17 points for the Presidents.

1966 – Peters Township wins its third straight Section 15 basketball championship. The Indians clinch the title by defeating Fort Cherry 60-54 as Bob Lindsay leads the way with 19 points.

1980 – The United States Olympic hockey team stuns the Soviet Union with a 4-3 victory in the medal round of the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. Captain Mike Eruzione scores the game-winning goal midway through the final period.

1980 – Ray Natili scores a game-high 22 points as Immaculate Conception defeats Charleroi 69-51 in a WPIAL Class AA boys basketball playoff game at W&J’s Henry Memorial Center.

1984 – The Pittsburgh Steelers trade a third-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for quarterback David Woodley.

1985 – Trinity’s Kathy Stough makes a shot with one second left in regulation to force overtime, and the Hillers go on to upset Mt. Lebanon 44-37 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.

1986 – Washington’s wrestling team wins the WPIAL Class AA Team Tournament by defeating Northgate 38-20 in the finals at Chartiers Valley.

1991 – Bobbie Jo Graham scores 24 points and Cris Shaw makes two free throws with two seconds left as Waynesburg College defeats Grove City 69-66 to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball title in the Yellow Jackets’ first season in the league.

1992 – The California University men’s basketball team overcomes a 12-point deficit in the final 11 minutes to defeat host Edinboro 82-77 and win the PSAC West Division title. The win is the 23rd straight for California (25-1), ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II. Kenney Toomer scores 26 points for the Vulcans.

2007 – Ron Skiles resigns as Bentworth High School’s football coach, ending his second stint with the Bearcats after four seasons.

2007 – Josip Lucic-Jozak scores 25 points, grabs 11 rebounds and helps Washington & Jefferson overcome a nine-point second-half defict and upset host Bethany 78-75 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference basketball tournament semifinals.

2007 – Avella’s Robbie Gagliani shoots 200-20x to finish in a three-way tie for first place at the WPIAL Individual Rifle Championships.

2013 – South Fayette’s Stephen Zombek wins the gold medal at the WPIAL 1-meter diving championships.
