Women’s lacrosse

After a slow start to the season facing a challenging non-conference schedule, Washington & Jefferson is gaining momentum. The Presidents secured their fourth-straight win Friday with a 20-6 road victory over the Saint Vincent.

The win improves W&J to 2-0 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play and 5-3 overall.

Eight Presidents scored with four of them registering hat tricks. Anna Kloehn posted a season-high five goals to lead the offensive efforts.

In the NFL

The Chicago Bears re-signed backup quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year contract Friday.

Peterman played in three games last season and made one start, completing 14 of 25 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown and an interception. He threw for 114 yards and a TD in a season-ending loss to Minnesota while filling in for Justin Fields.

Peterman has passed for 712 yards with four touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

In college basketball

Kansas sharpshooter Gradey Dick is entering the NBA draft after one season with the Jayhawks.

The 6-foot-8 guard started all 36 games for the Jayhawks and averaged 14.1 points while shooting better than 40% from 3-point range. He made 83 3-pointers, a program record for a freshman.

  • Michigan center Hunter Dickinson has entered the transfer portal.

The 7-1 Dickinson led the Wolverines with 18.5 points and nine rebounds per game last season as a junior.

  • Grant McCasland was hired as Texas Tech’s new coach, getting a six-year contract with the Red Raiders a day after North Texas won the NIT title to wrap up that school’s first 30-win season.

North Texas was 135-65 in six seasons under McCasland, who has a master’s degree from Texas Tech. The Mean Green were 31-7 this season, which came a year after they had first broken the school record by winning 25 games.

In college football

Former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is joining UCLA’s coaching staff as director of leadership.

Niumatalolo led Navy for 15 years and was the winningest coach in school history at 109-83. The Midshipmen, however, finished with losing records the past three seasons, including 4-8 the past two.

In tennis

Russian and Belarusian players will be able to compete at Wimbledon as neutral athletes after the All England Club on Friday reversed its ban from last year.

The players must sign declarations of neutrality and comply with “appropriate conditions,” including not expressing support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The players cannot receive funding from the Russian or Belarusian states, including sponsorship from companies operated or controlled by the states.

In the NBA

Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan each scored 23 points and the Chicago Bulls routed the injury-plagued Charlotte Hornets 121-91 Friday night.

Nikola Vucevic added 21 points and eight rebounds for the Bulls, who entered the game having lost three of their previous five games and clinging to a two-game lead over the Washington Wizards for the final spot in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament.

  • Joel Embiid had 25 points and 12 rebounds, James Harden had 23 points and 11 assists and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Toronto Raptors, 117-110.
  • Paolo Banchero had 30 points and 12 rebounds, Markelle Fultz added 25 points and the Orlando Magic overcame a 16-point second half deficit to beat the Washington Wizards, 116-109.
