High school baseball

Keegan Kosek fired a three-hit shutout as Chartiers-Houston defeated Brownsville 9-0 in a non-section action Wednesday.

Kosek walked three and struck out six as C-H improved its record to 2-0.

The Bucs led 1-0 before scoring seven times in the fourth inning. Ryan Opfer drove in three runs.

  • Andrew Bredel went 3-for-3 with five RBI, powering fast-starting Burgettstown to an 11-7 win over rival Fort Cherry.

The Blue Devils (1-0) did all of their scoring in the first three innings, building a lead of 11-4. Bredel had a three-run double in the third inning.

James Leuice had a double for Burgettstown. Kuzior struck out seven and Bredel added five over three innings of relief.

Blake Sweder doubled for Fort Cherry.

  • Jackson Nopwaskey threw a four-inning no-hitter as Beth-Center routed Clairton, 24-0.

Nopwaskey struck out six and was supported by a 16-hit attack. The Bulldogs (1-1) scored in every inning, including 11 times in the fourth. Ethan Varesko hit a triple, Alton Kerrigna doubled and drove in three, and Luke Amon and Dustin Johnson each had three RBI.

  • Ben Shields’ single scored Brock Henderson with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Charleroi edged Ringgold, 5-4.

The Cougars (2-0) overcame an early 4-2 deficit. Shields went 3-for-3 with two RBI and also was the winning pitcher in relief. The Cougars’ Joe Campbell was 4-for-4.

Ringgold’s Ashton Ray had two doubles and Hunter Mamie also had a two-bagger.

  • Carmichaels took advantage of four Albert Gallatin errors to score three unearned runs and defeated the visiting Colonials, 4-1.

The Mikes had only three hits but generated enough offense for winning pitcher Brenden Duranko and reliever Aydan Adamson, who registered a save.

  • Jefferson-Morgan literally walked away with an 8-7 victory over Trinity Christian.

The Rockets won on a bases-loaded walk-off walk by Jaymison Robinson. J-M trailed 7-6 entering the bottom of the seventh. Dayten Marion started the bottom fo the seventh by drawing a walk. He stole second and third and tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch. Trinity Christian then issued four consecutive walks that ended the game.

John Woodward went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI for J-M (1-1).

Marion was the winning pitcher with four innings of relief.

  • Starter Joseph Vanzin and reliever Ryan Bioni combined on a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Chartiers Valley defeated visiting Peters Township, 3-1.

Vanzin struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings. The Colts broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth on an RBI double by Justin Ferrari.

The lone hit for PT (1-1) was an RBI single by Jack Lutte.

  • Mapletown scored 12 runs in the first inning and went on to a 15-0 four-inning win over Turkeyfoot.

A.J. Vanata hit a double and triple for the Maples. Winning pitcher Landan Stevenson doubled and threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts. Jeremiah Mick also doubled for the Maples.

  • Bethel Park scored on a two-out passed ball in the top of the eighth inning to beat Canon-McMillan, 1-0.

The Big Macs, who were held to two hits, had two baserunners in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to push across the tying run.

Mason Fixx and Cam Russell had the only hits for C-M.

  • McGuffey unleashed a 16-hit attack and rolled over Frazier 17-7 in five innings in a game played Tuesday night.

Jacob Ross tripled and drove in four runs, and Ryan Keith doubled and had four RBI to lead the McGuffey offense. Lincoln Johnson and Sam Stout each had a double.

Jantzen Durbin was the winning pitcher.

High school softball

Makenzie Morgan’s single to center field scored Sami Bewick from second base with winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Peters Township edged Baldwin 8-7 in a non-section contest.

Bewick, who had homered and doubled, led off the seventh by drawing a walk. She advanced to second base on a passed ball, setting up Morgan’s game-winning hit. Skylar Lemansky had a double and triple for PT, Emersen Gatten tripled and Bewick drove in three runs.

Elena Tylka was the winning pitcher.

  • Payton Gratchen homered and doubled, powering Burgettstown to a 7-3 victory over visiting Freedom in non-section action.

Pitchers Layla Sherman and Julia Jastrzebski combined on a nine-hitter and struck out 12. Peyton Mermon had a double for the Blue Devils (1-0).

  • Ashton Batis drove in a pair of runs and Bailey Barnyak fired a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as Carmichaels blanked McGuffey, 3-0.

Batis had RBI singles in the third and fifth innings and Kaitlyn Waggett singled home a run in the fourth.

That was enough offense for Barnyak, who overcame five walks to help the Mikes improve to 3-0.

  • Sophia Celaschi struck out 13 and Charleroi used a four-run fourth inning to beat Frazier, 5-2.

Ella Sypolt had a two-run single in the fourth that gave Charleroi a 4-2 lead. Leena Henderson had two hits for the Cougars.

  • Kayla Larkin twirled a four-hit shutout and helped her cause by belting a home run as Jefferson-Morgan blanked Beth-Center, 7-0.

The Rockets (1-1) scored six runs over the first two innings and took advantage of six errors by B-C.

Larkin struck out eight. K.J. McDaniel had a double for the Bulldogs.

  • Avella scored four runs in the bottom fo the fifth inni9ng to rally for a 7-4 victory over Washington.

Avella (1-0) trailed 4-3 entering the fifth and scored the tying run when Ava Frank drew a bases-loaded walk. An error pushed across the goa-ahead run, and a pair of RBI groundouts gave the Eagles a three-run cushion.

Winning pitcher Isabella Green struck out eight. Katie Dryer had two hits and two runs for the Eagles.

Wash High’s Sierra Johnson hit a two-run homer that gave the Prexies the lead in the fifth. Rylee Wilson smacked a triple.

  • Lauren VanDivner doubled and drove in two runs, winning pitcher Olivia Kolo9witz struck out 10 and Belle Vernon edged visiting Waynesburg 4-3 in non-section play.

Waynesburg (1-1) led 3-2 before Belle Vernon (2-0) scored twice in the fourth inning.

Kolowitz, Maren Metikosh and Gracie Sokol each doubled for the Leopards. No statistics for Waynesburg were reported.

  • Chartiers Valley won a slugfest over host South Fayette, 17-11.

The Colts’ Madison Crump went 5-for-6 with four runs, three RBI, two doubles and a triple.

Boys lacrosse

Despite three goals each by Tyler Day and Dom DeRubbo, Trinity lost 9-6 to Penn-Trafford on Tuesday night at Hiller Field in the Section 1-AA opener for both teams.

In golf

Keegan Bradley extended his dubious streak to 16 matches over 11 years without winning in the Dell Technologies Match Play. He sure felt like a winner Wednesday.

Bradley was 4 down with five holes to play when he rallied to scratch out a halve against Denny McCarthy in the opening round at Austin Country Club.

Defending champion and top seed Scottie Scheffler missed two putts inside 5 feet over the last five holes before making a 12-footer for birdie on the 18th to beat Davis Riley in a rematch of their U.S. Junior Amateur title match 10 years ago that Scheffler won.

Jon Rahm, the No. 2 seed, was the only player from the top four seeds to lose. Rickie Fowler took him down on the 17th hole.
