1973 – Orange baseballs are used in an exhibition game by Oakland owner Charlie Finley. The A’s suffered 11-5 exhibition loss to Cleveland. George Hendrick of the Indians hit three home runs in the game.

1984 – The NFL’s Colts leave the city of Baltimore in the early hours of the morning, and relocate to Indianapolis.

1994 – Pitt hires Western Kentucky’s Ralph Willard to be the Panthers’ head basketball coach. Willard replaces fired Paul Evans, whose contract expired.

1998 – The California University women’s softball team, which won the NCAA Division II national championship in 1997, is named the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner.

1998 – Bentworth’s Bryant Thomas, who averaged 32.4 points per game, is named the Observer-Reporter Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Mapletown’s Kristin Polosky, who averaged 25.4 points and had a rare quadruple double in a game against Jefferson-Morgan, is the Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

2007 – West Virginia beats Clemson for its first NIT title in 65 years. Frank Young scores 24 points, including six three-pointers, and De’Sean Butler adds 20 points to help the Mountaineers to a 78-73 victory.
