1964 – Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches a perfect game against the New York Mets. The no-hitter gives Bunning one in each league and the Phillies’ Gus Triandos becomes the first catcher to handle no-hitters in both leagues.
1999 – Palmyra High School scores three runs in the first inning and goes on to a 7-2 victory over Waynesburg in the PIAA Class AA baseball championship game at RiverSide Stadium in Harrisburg.

1925 – The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 24-6 with Kiki Cuyler and Pie Traynor each hitting a grand slam and Max Carey getting two hits in the first and eighth innings.
1937 – Joe Louis knocks out Jim Braddock in the eighth round at Chicago’s Comiskey Park to win the world heavyweight title, which he would hold for 11 years.
1938 – In a rematch portrayed in both countries as good vs. evil, Joe Louis of the U.S. knocks out Germany’s Max Schmeling at 2:04 of the first round at Yankee Stadium to retain the world heavyweight title.
1984 – The Pittsburgh Maulers play their final game in the United States Football League, a 26-2 loss at Jacksonville. The game is played in a torrential rainstorm that floods one sideline so badly that both teams have to share the same sideline. The loss ends a dismal 3-15 season for Pittsburgh. Because of the USFL’s planned move to a fall schedule, the Maulers will cease operations.
1986 – Fort Cherry High School outfielder Brad Tokar, who batted better than .400 and stole 33 bases, is named the MVP of the Observer-Reporter All-District Baseball Team.
1996 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade defenseman Sergei Zubov to the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenseman Kevin Hatcher.
1996 – Michael Moorer of Monessen regains the IBF heavyweight boxing title from Axel Schulz on a split decision in Frankfurt, Germany.
2011 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Dan Bylsma becomes the first coach in franchise history to win the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Coach of the Year.
2012 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade center Jordan Staal to Carolina for the Hurricanes’ first-round draft pick.
