TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Quincy Latimore’s three-run homer highlighted Washington’s eight-run fifth inning, and Tyler Elrod threw a four-hit shutout, as the Wild Things defeated the Traverse City Beach Bums, 11-0, to earn a split of a doubleheader Wednesday night.

Traverse City won the opening game, 4-1, and moved into a first-place tie with Lake Erie in the Frontier League’s East Division.

Elrod (2-0) gave up four hits, walked four and struck out 10 in his first professional shutout.

Latimore’s home run was the big hit in Washington’s eight-run fifth that opened a 9-0 lead. Stewart Ijames added a solo homer in the sixth to help Washington to only its second win over Traverse City in the last 24 meetings.

Former Wild Things outfielder Andrew Heck drove in two runs, and Beaver County native Scott Dunn won for the 15th time in 16 decisions, for Traverse City in the opener.

Heck, who was the Wild Things’ top hitter last year but was released early this season, had a run-scoring double in the Beach Bums’ two-run first inning and drove in a run with a groundout in the second.

Dunn (15-1), a South Side Beaver graduate, allowed one run over five innings. Nick Capito followed with two scoreless innings for his 16th save.

Dayne Quist (8-3) threw a complete game for Washington, giving up seven hits and four runs (three earned).

Washington’s lone run scored on C.J. Beatty’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the fifth. Beatty went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the nightcap.
