After just three months, Dozen Bake Shop is shutting down in Peters Township.

Owner Doreen Valentine posted on Dozen’s Facebook page Monday night: “I’m truly sad to announce that I have decided to close both locations of Dozen Bake Shop & Dozen Cupcakes as of the end of September. I fought the good fight with everything I had but it just is no longer sustainable for me and my family financially.”

Dozen, which specializes in gourmet cupcakes made from scratch, opened June 26 at Donaldson’s Crossroads Shopping Center, 3909 Washington Road. Its longer-established store is on Butler Street in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh.

Both will cease operations after business Saturday. Hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We’re going to bake off everything we have and sell at discount prices, then be closed,” said Jill Strangis, one of two managers in Peters and a township resident.

She said Valentine notified employees of the pending closures at the beginning of September “to give us a month to find new jobs.” Strangis estimated that 18 to 20 work at her shop.

Valentine previously closed her other Dozen shop May 25 in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.

Strangis said the Peters store was “starting to build (a positive reputation). By the end of Auguest, we had a number of regulars and were doing pretty well. We have tons of customers who are coming in and saying they are disappointed.”

Dozen also serves pastries, soups, sandwiches, salads and other items, plus vegan options.

Valentine promised on Facebook she will honor all wedding clients, posting that: “I will finish all the weddings that are booked through the end of the year. I’ve managed to contact every bride except two, who I will continue to reach out to. If I have somehow missed you, please email me at info@dozenbakeshop.com.”
