In response to the editorial of Oct. 17, “Merging city, borough police makes sense,” the East Washington Police Department is also a highly trained and modernly equipped police department, and is better equipped presently than the City of Washington. Our department has 16 highly trained, well-experienced police officers who are dedicated to serving East Washington Borough and its residents.

The police study that was conducted suggested we upgrade our computers and place a server in for the capability of information-sharing with other departments, for record purposes. Our borough, several months ago, joined with five other municipalities to receive a $100,000 grant. This grant will provide $16,660 to the Borough of East Washington for its police department to purchase new computers. That will allow us to place a server in that will provide the department with information-sharing, as the police study has recommended. This grant was approved, and is pending.

One of our former mayors, Harold Fergus, stated at one time, “The identity of East Washington Borough is the police department. Without the police department, there is no East Washington Borough.” I hope the residents of East Washington Borough understand this and say “no” to disbanding our police department and contracting with the City of Washington.
