AVELLA – The wait is finally over.
For the first time in 37 years, Avella will have a representative at Monday’s WPIAL playoff pairings meeting.
The Eagles got into the playoffs for the first time since 1976 with a 55-14 victory over Bentworth Friday night to sew up fourth place in the Tri-County South Conference.
“I think I feel relief and happiness,” said Avella head coach Ryan Cecchini. “It’s great for the kids, the coaches and the town. I’ve been here all my life, and it’s just fantastic for the whole team.”
Nick Kusich gained 89 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Eagles (5-3, 6-3). Santino Paris had 72 yards on three carries and scored on a 54-yard run to open the scoring. Zach Thompson had 74 yards on two carries and a TD.
“I told our kids before the game that you can’t take anything for granted,” Cecchini said. “Nothing is going to be handed to you. We got everyone involved on Senior Night. We have 10 seniors and they were all involved.”
Ethan Tush scored on two runs for the Bearcats (1-7, 1-8).
