Health center is government done right

Spending tax dollars is an easy target for public scorn, especially in light of recent budget deficits experienced across all levels of government and the partial shutdown in Washington, D.C. Sometimes, however, government can provide a valuable public benefit, like protecting the U.S. borders or insuring bank deposits.
One such example of government spending done right is located in Washington County as a collaborative effort of county, state and federal levels – the Washington County Health Center. Unfortunately, I only learned of the great work of all those involved at the WCHC recently, once my mother was admitted in June of this year to the Alzheimer?s Unit referred to as One West.?
Anyone who had a role in securing funding for the WCHC, planned its development, oversees its operations and makes this facility function on a daily basis is to be commended. The WCHC truly breaks the stereotype of the ?old county home.?Although she unfortunately died a couple of weeks ago (due to the aggressive nature of her Alzheimer?s disease and not the care of the WCHC), my mother had been residing in a restful environment, cared for by a staff that assured her of the dignity of life she deserved. The facility is clean, comfortable and caring. The staff never ceased to address any questions my family asked, finishing up any tasks quickly to dedicate as much time as we needed to understand my mother?s condition and the care they would provide.
For some residents of One West, the staff is the only human interactions they receive. There are many residents eager for attention and love, as they may not have families of their own or might be unable to visit One West on a frequent basis. You see this immediately upon entering, yet you also see the staff tending to each resident?s every need.
If you can, I urge anyone to stop down and see this great facility for yourself, to learn about the people caring for local seniors and maybe talk to those residents who just want a hug to know someone cares or for someone to listen. I believe the WCHC can always use volunteers to help throughout the center and would welcome those interested in lending a hand.
I wish I was aware of the WCHC before my mother started living there, but how reassuring to know an excellent facility making a positive impact in the community exists in my hometown. Thank you to everyone who had and continues to have a role at the WCHC; you are all vital to its mission, are appreciated and made a tough disease a bit more comforting to my family. Please continue your outstanding work and be proud of what you created there. It truly is an asset to the community.
