Bentworth School District superintendent to retire
BENTLEYVILLE – Bentworth School District’s superintendent will retire next year and be replaced by the man who is currently second in command of the schools.
Charlie Baker, 63, will leave the district June 30 after having been Bentworth superintendent for eight years.
“I feel I’m leaving on a good note,” Baker said Wednesday.
The school board Nov. 12 appointed Bentworth’s assistant superintendent, Scott Martin, to replace Baker, giving him a five-year contract paying him $120,000 a year.
Martin began his career in eduction in New Bern, N.C., and later worked as a behavioral specialist for schools in Monongalia County, W.Va. He has worked at Bentworth since 2007 and lives in Smithfield.
Baker began his career 38 years ago, having first worked in West Virginia as a middle school social studies teacher and rising to the rank of superintendent there before joining Bentworth.
He said he and his wife, Sheryl, who live in Wellsburg, W.Va., purchased a house in Florida where they plan to spend winters after he retires.
“I am not leaving for any other reason than I am looking forward to retirement,” Baker said. “I’ve had an absolutely wonderful run here.”
